Cat Urination Red Flags

It is important for cat owners to recognize signs of urinary conditions.  Some pet owners assume their cat is “mad” at them – and wait too long.   Straining to urinate, urinating in odd (non litterbox) places or bloody urine can be signs of a be life-threatening condition, and it is always wise to see us immediately before any urethral blockage occurs.

If you notice any of these signs of urinary problems in your cat, please call us as soon as possible.

  • urinating out of the box
  • straining to urinate or only urinating small amounts
  • bloody urine
  • painful in abdomen when picked up, meowing
  • anorexia or decreased appetite
  • lethargy
  • excessive licking of genital area
  • If Dr. Janssen rules out medical causes for the inappropriate urinary behavior, he will recommend some behavioral modification techniques, litter or litter box suggestions, or recommend a behaviorist to help with the problem.
